This Tuesday, the team confirmed that star Sophie Cunningham will not play again for the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering a serious injury to her right knee. The MRI revealed a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear, ending her participation this year.

The incident occurred on Sunday during the matchup against the Connecticut Sun, when Cunningham collided with Bria Hartley in the second quarter. The team officially announced that the player will undergo rehabilitation and is expected to make a full recovery.

Cunningham’s knee injury

Cunningham, who had just celebrated her 29th birthday on Saturday, received the devastating news just two days later. Her absence adds to a growing list of injuries on the team: Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have also been ruled out due to season-ending injuries.

Additionally, Caitlin Clark, one of the most anticipated figures, has missed the last 13 games due to a persistent groin issue. The team’s medical situation has forced management to sign Shay Peddy under a hardship contract to fill Cunningham’s spot.

Sophie Cunningham delivers standout performance

Before the injury, Cunningham was having a solid season with Indiana Fever. She averaged 8.6 points per game and maintained an impressive 43.2% shooting from three-point range. Her physical and gritty style made her a key piece in the team’s rotation.

Her popularity among fans grew significantly this year, and her absence leaves a difficult void to fill both athletically and emotionally. Indiana Fever will now face the rest of the season without one of its most consistent leaders.
