Sophie Cunningham definitely didn’t finish her first year with the Indiana Fever as she had hoped.
After spending the first six seasons of her career with the Phoenix Mercury and joining the team as a free agent this winter, her knee injury ended her 2025 season.
Sophie brings relief to Indiana fans
On August 17, in a game against the Connecticut Sun, the 29-year-old guard suffered a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her right knee. Cunningham collided with Sun guard Bria Hartley, who fell hard on her knee with just under eight minutes remaining in the second quarter.
This unfortunate injury made Cunningham the third Fever player to end her season, along with Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson.
After undergoing surgery days after the injury, the Fever’s star point guard shared a promising update on her health.
In a new episode of “Show Me Something,” Sophie and West Wilson discussed her surgical procedure, and the player confirmed that she’s doing “real good” and has been able to make progress in her recovery thanks to rehabilitation:
“I’ve been doing a little bit of rehab,” she said. “Lots of icing, just trying to get extension… I’ve been really trying to work on getting my leg straight,” Sophie added.
And while this is good news, Cunningham will not be available for the rest of the season or the playoffs. Despite fans’ desire to see her shine again, the priority is her 100% recovery. The truth is that recovery from these injuries can take up to 12 months, so it is more likely that we will see her on the court next year.
After 30 games with Indiana, in which she averaged 8.6 points, 1.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals, she will become a free agent again during the preseason. Only time will tell if the team offers her a contract extension and whether or not she accepts the offer.
Meanwhile, the Fever are preparing to travel and face the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, the 29th, at Crypto.com Arena.
