Sophie Cunningham nearly misses game against Dallas Wings after unexpected incident: “America’s enforcer should not have to suffer like this”

The Indiana Fever fell just short of a dramatic comeback on Tuesday night, losing 81-80 to the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter and playing without star guard Caitlin Clark, the Fever pushed the game to the wire before falling in the closing moments.

Forward Sophie Cunningham played a key role in keeping the Fever competitive, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting with two rebounds, three assists and two three-pointers in 35 minutes. However, her night almost ended before it began after an unexpected pregame setback.

Cunningham revealed she arrived later than usual because her car broke down on the way to the arena. Rather than miss the game, the 28-year-old walked the rest of the way, heels and all, before making her customary tunnel entrance.

After the game, Cunningham shared the story on social media with a lighthearted post, writing, “I need a car the dogs were barkin!” The admission quickly sparked a wave of support from fans.

Sophie Cunningham’s car trouble

“Somebody get this woman a car,” one fan wrote on X. Another added, “America’s enforcer should not have to suffer like this .” Suggestions poured in for brands to step up, with one user tagging Cadillac to offer an electric vehicle and another calling the incident perfect material for an Uber commercial.

Many fans praised Cunningham for her resilience, with one noting, “She took it like the champ she is and walked in HEELS… Girl no, I would have broken my back.”

The Fever will look to bounce back on Friday when they host the Washington Mystics, hoping to keep pace in the playoff race.

As for Cunningham, supporters will be watching to see if she gets to the game without another transportation mishap – or perhaps with the help of a new sponsor.
