Neither Sophie Cunningham nor Indiana Fever fans expected her first year with the team to end this way, with an unfortunate tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her right knee, ending her 2025 season.
However, in that time, fans have been able to connect with the 29-year-old guard and hit it off with his unique sense of humor.
Cunningham Issues Warning Despite Injury
After being injured on August 17 in a game against the Connecticut Sun, Sophie had to undergo surgery on her knee and is recovering favorably. However, her return to the court is still a long way off.
This unfortunate injury made Cunningham the third Fever player to end her season, along with Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson.
Meanwhile, the Fever star took to Instagram to share with her 1.3 million followers the progress on her road to recovery.
Sophie posted a standing selfie and left a telling message: “starting to feel like me again so y’all better watch tf out” she wrote alongside an emojis going silent and another sly one, who looks on with a half smile.
Although she won’t be able to help the Fever get their playoff berth or participate in their games, Sophie didn’t miss this opportunity to remind everyone of her presence and strength.
Undoubtedly, her 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.7 three-pointers in 30 appearances and her bold and competitive spirit are being felt by the team. In fact, they posted a 2-3 record in their five games off the court, including a loss to Valkyries.
Although they are not safe, Fever is holding on to their playoff berth. Now, they prepare to travel to face Phoenix Mercury on Friday the 5th at PHX Arena.
Then, on Friday the 5th they will host Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, on Sunday the 7th they will face Washington Mystics at CFG Bank Arena Baltimore, and finally on Tuesday the 9th they will face Minnesota Lynx at home.
