Sophie Cunningham‘s arrival in February at Indiana Fever marked a turning point for fans. Her competitive and aggressive nature, her humor, and her protective instincts toward her teammates, especially Caitlin Clark, earned her the support and affection of all the team’s fans.

Added to her talent, which she had already demonstrated in her six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, the 29-year-old point guard turned heads this season. And this was registered by Google.

Sophie reacts to being included in an important list

On Thursday, Google shared its annual “Year in Search” summary, revealing the 10 most searched athletes in the United States.

Cunningham not only ranked number 7 on the list, but, to the surprise of many, she was the only woman.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders took the top spot. Other NFL stars joined Coach Prime’s son, with New York Giants running back and quarterback Cam Skattebo and Jaxson Dart taking 4th and 6th place respectively. Fifth place went to Green Bay Packers linebacker Micah Parsons.

Shedeur’s brother, Shilo Sanders, also appears on the list in eighth place, below Sophie, and in ninth place is Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

Boxer Terence Crawford, Dallas Mavericks basketball player Cooper Flagg, and golfer Justin Rose round out the list, ranking second, third, and tenth, respectively.

Faced with this situation, Cunningham decided to bring out her sense of humor and shared this list on her Instagram stories, which had been previously posted by Deion Sanders, commenting, “Hi Boys” alongside a hand making the horns sign and a cowboy emoji.

Meanwhile, with a new WNBA season ahead, Sophie has a difficult decision ahead of her because, once the trade period opens on February 1, she will be a free agent. Only time will tell whether or not she will continue with the Indiana Fever.

She ended her first season with the team early after suffering a torn medial collateral ligament in her right knee, requiring surgery. She finished the year averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 30 games. Even so, she was the most sought-after female athlete.
