Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull drew attention before their recent matchup in Phoenix, not for their play on the court, but for arriving in coordinated “cowboy” outfits that made them nearly impossible to tell apart.
The Indiana Fever forwards sported yellow “Howdy Cowboy” crop tops, denim bottoms, Daisy Dukes for Cunningham and a denim miniskirt for Hull, paired with cowboy boots, creating a striking twin-like appearance.
The snaps quickly went viral online as the team’s official Instagram, in collaboration with the WNBA account, shared the look with the caption: “seeing double … Lexie Hull & Sophie Cunningham popped out in matching fits for tonight’s game in Phoenix.”
The timing of the lighthearted fashion moment was notable for Sophie, who had recently been at the center of an unusual controversy as days earlier, during a game against the Los Angeles Sparks, an explicit object was thrown onto the court.
It prompted the 28-year-old hooper to publicly urge fans to “stop throwing dildos on the court.”
Yet rather than shy away from the incident, she leaned into a playful social media approach, posting humorous and self-deprecating videos in the aftermath.
Her and her 25-year-old colleague’ game-day outfits provided a lighter storyline for a team that fell 90-65 to the Phoenix Mercury in what many described as a “revenge game” for DeWanna Bonner.
Bonner because she was facing her former team when she went up against Hull and Cunningham, after being waived by the Fever on June 25 after missing time for “personal reasons”.
Caitlin Clark update: Will Indiana Fever star play vs Chicago Sky?
The Fever‘s next challenge comes against the Chicago Sky in a Saturday night matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse but both teams enter the contest without their marquee players.
Caitlin Clark for Indiana and Angel Reese for Chicago are both sidelined due to injury meaning that this fixture will miss out on the continuation of their infamous rivalry, which began back in college basketball.
Clark‘s groin injury has kept her out since mid-July, marking an unfamiliar stretch of inactivity for the former Iowa Hawkeyes standout, who never missed a game in college or during her rookie WNBA season.
The Fever are also without guard Sydney Colson, who exited their last game early with a leg injury.
The Sky, sitting 11th in the standings, will again be without Reese, who has been sidelined since July 29 with a back injury. Before being ruled out, Angel had been leading Chicago in points, rebounds, and assists.
Indiana has dominated the series in recent seasons, holding a 6-1 record over Chicago since last year, and their most recent meeting, on July 27, resulted in a 93-78 Fever victory, led by 35 points from Kelsey Mitchell.
