Sophie Cunningham accidentally sends Caitlin Clark Indiana Fever snub

The Indiana Fever appear to be weathering Caitlin Clark’s injury absence with increasing resilience, as team chemistry and tactical flexibility begin to compensate for the star guard’s sidelining – something Sophie Cunningham recognizes.

Though the 23-year-old’s health concerns have been persistent, most recently a right groin injury that has kept her out since July 15, recent performances suggest the team is adapting well without its marquee player.

Despite a 5-7 record without Clark in the lineup, the Fever have found a way to stay competitive and most notably, they recently posted an impressive 90-80 win over the defending champion Las Vegas Aces on July 24.

And Cunningham was clear in her postgame remarks that the guard’s absence is no longer a disruptive factor in the locker room, proudly proclaiming the Indiana Fever know how to win basketball games regardless.

“I don’t think that it affects us anymore,” Cunningham said of Clark‘s fitness. “We put out a statement today that, you know, she’s day-to-day, and so we know that as a team, and so that’s helpful to mentally prepare,”

“But I really do think that, you know, if we have Caitlin, great, and we know how to play with her. If we don’t have Caitlin, great. We know how to play without her, and I think that’s just so important.”

Fever shine without Clark against Aces

Clark, who has already dealt with a left quad strain and left groin issue earlier this season, was ruled out indefinitely after undergoing additional medical evaluations.

The team confirmed that no further injuries were discovered and emphasized a cautious return plan focused on her long-term health that even saw her miss the WNBA All-Star Game.

In the absence of Clark, Indiana’s depth has begun to shine. Against the Aces, Cunningham delivered a standout performance, scoring 15 points while shooting 4-for-5 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Kelsey Mitchell added 21 points, and both Natasha Howard and Aliyah Boston recorded double-doubles. Aari McDonald, who rejoined the roster under a hardship contract, provided a clutch three-pointer that helped seal the win.

Stephanie White‘s strategic adjustments have also been instrumental following injuries to both Cunningham and Sydney Colson, she brought in McDonald, whose shrewd decisions have kept the ball rolling in Indiana.

Whilst Clark has struggled for form in the wake of injuries, she remains a critical piece statistically. In her 13 appearances, the Fever posted an 8-5 record and the team’s offensive rating with her on the floor sits at 108.6. It drops to 100.4 in her absence.

Eyes now turn to see when she will next be available for Indiana. It won’t be the next contest though, as the Fever prepare to take on Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky on Sunday, January 27 at the United Center.
