Sofia Vergara’s backstage moment with Canelo Alvarez raises eyebrows, and his wife steps in to mark her territory

Hollywood glamour collided with boxing drama in Las Vegas this past weekend when Colombian-American actress Sofia Vergara had an unexpected and slightly awkward exchange with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

The moment unfolded backstage at the Allegiant Stadium following Alvarez’s highly anticipated title clash against Terence Crawford.

While Alvarez was the main sporting attraction, drawing in celebrities and fellow athletes from across the country, it was a brief hug with Vergara that made waves on social media.

The 53-year-old actress, known globally for her roles in Modern Family, America’s Got Talent, and Despicable Me 4, popped backstage after the fight to greet Alvarez.

The champion, 35, was seated on a white sofa draped with a Mexican flag when he stood to embrace Vergara. Cameras captured what began as a friendly moment but quickly turned into an exchange many labeled “awkward.”

Alvarez’s nervous expression and tentative body language added to the impression, particularly as his wife, Fernanda Gomez, stood nearby watching closely.

What happened after the hug drew even more attention. Netflix’s official X account shared a clip of the interaction, which cut off immediately after the embrace before showing a photo opportunity featuring the two stars.

Observers quickly noticed that Vergara and Alvarez were not placed next to each other in the picture.

Instead, Gomez stepped into the middle, firmly positioning herself between her husband and the actress. The final shot showed Alvarez on the right with one arm around a child, Gomez at the center, and Vergara smiling on the left.

Gomez’s move did not go unnoticed. Fans online were quick to highlight her protective stance, with one writing: “Canelo wife was NOT PLAYING,” while another quipped: “Lmaoo his wife made sure to stand between them.” A third added: “Canelo eyes stayed straight. His wife had tunnel vision on him.”

The incident became a talking point not just because of the embrace itself, but also because of the broader context of Alvarez’s high-profile family life. The boxer has five children with five different women.

His eldest daughter, Emily Cinnamon Alvarez, was born from his relationship with childhood sweetheart Karen Beltran.

Model Valeria Quiroz is the mother of his second daughter, Mia Ener Alvarez. He shares a son, Saul Adiel Alvarez, with Nadia Sepulveda. With Gomez, Alvarez has two daughters, Maria Fernanda and Eve Victoria.

Alvarez and Gomez began dating in 2016 and tied the knot in 2021, cementing her role as a central figure in both his personal life and his public appearances.

Her visible presence during the Las Vegas event reinforced that role, showing not just her support during the fight but also her attentiveness in moments that might otherwise appear lighthearted.

A fight to remember, a moment to discuss

Though the awkward hug made headlines, the original draw of the night was Alvarez’s clash with Terence Crawford.

The Mexican fighter, who has built an extraordinary career marked by multiple championship belts, ultimately came up short in this bout, losing on points in what many described as a tactical masterclass by Crawford.

Still, the night was far from lacking in star power. Alongside Vergara, the crowd included boxing legends, actors, and celebrities from various industries, all eager to watch two of the sport’s greats go head-to-head. Yet, it was the human, unscripted backstage exchange between Vergara, Alvarez, and Gomez that captured the cultural conversation in the aftermath.

While Alvarez prepares for his next step inside boxing’s most competitive arenas, the internet will likely remember this weekend just as much for an embrace and a well-timed move by Fernanda Gomez as for the punches traded under the bright lights of Las Vegas.
