Sofia Jamora’s lawyer exposes the NBA’s double standard after the Hayes case

Violence is condemnable in any scenario, and against a woman even more so, especially when it involves players from professional leagues. At times, they seem to act like cavemen, and everything suggests they do so because they believe they will not be punished, or if they are, the consequences will be minimal.

All of this comes after what happened with Lakers player Jaxson Hayes, who pushed the Wizards’ mascot, G-Wiz, while it was performing on the court. The NBA decided to suspend him for one game.

But the league did nothing in the case involving his former partner, Sofia Jamora. In response, the attorney representing her in the domestic violence case told TMZ Sports that the league has its priorities completely misplaced.

Confused priorities for the NBA and Jaxson Hayes

Regarding the suspension, Waukenn McCoy said he was stunned by the league’s swift action in this situation.

They gave him a one-game suspension, that’s ridiculous.

McCoy said, adding that the league took action against the player for what he did to the Wizards’ mascot, but has done little or nothing regarding the case in which the same player struck a woman, arguing that it did not occur on NBA premises.

It’s a public embarrassment to them because it’s their brand.”… “If it’s a woman, they drag their feet.

The player has not been punished in any way for the incident that took place in 2021 involving Jamora, despite the police arriving at his home after receiving a call about the assault.

The player even had a physical altercation with the officers when they arrived. Police had to use a taser and restrain him on the ground to calm him down. The LAPD later opened an investigation into a possible use of excessive force.

Sofia Jamora’s lawsuit against Jaxson Hayes

The woman later filed a lawsuit in March 2022, alleging that he had physically hurt her several times during their relationship, including the incident that led police to their home.

In a video obtained by TMZ Sports, the Lakers player can be seen pushing the woman and spitting in her direction. It was only after that video surfaced that the NBA launched its own investigation, but so far, nothing has happened, and it appears unlikely that any consequences will follow.

In June 2025, the lawsuit was withdrawn. McCoy explained that the parties reached an amicable settlement and added that Jamora continues to stand up for women’s rights.

Meanwhile, the player, who was suspended just one game for shoving the Wizards’ mascot, served that suspension against the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, February 5, 2026, but regarding the alleged assault on his former partner, nothing has occurred.

Upcoming games for the Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers currently sit in sixth place in the Western Conference with a record of 30 wins and 19 losses. Their next five games are:

  1. Saturday, Feb. 7: Golden State Warriors
  2. Monday, Feb. 9: Oklahoma City Thunder
  3. Tuesday, Feb. 10: San Antonio Spurs
  4. Thursday, Feb. 12: Dallas Mavericks
  5. Friday, Feb. 20: LA Clippers
