Skip Bayless accuses Caleb Williams of trying to steal his nickname from George Gervin: The legal battle is underway

Skip Bayless has ignited a fresh controversy by accusing Caleb Williams of attempting to take a nickname long associated with George Gervin, with a legal dispute now underway.

The issue centers on the nickname “Iceman,” which has recently been embraced by Williams‘ teammates after a series of composed late-game performances, including a dramatic playoff comeback that elevated his reputation as a clutch performer.

Looking to capitalise on that growing identity, Williams filed multiple trademark applications tied to the nickname, including branding elements and imagery connected to a defining play during a postseason win over Green Bay.

However, the move quickly drew a response from Gervin, whose legacy in basketball has been intertwined with the same moniker for decades, prompting his team to submit competing filings shortly after Williams‘ applications were made.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for [Williams],” Gervin told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He’s already proved greatness and his potential upside is great.

“Like an ‘Iceman.’ But that name is taken… All I’m saying is: Young fella, we’ve already got one ‘Iceman.'”

While Gervin struck a respectful tone, Bayless took a far sharper stance, criticising the quarterback publicly and framing the situation as an attempt to appropriate a historic nickname tied to NBA greatness.

“I’m a Caleb Williams fan. But I was a much bigger Iceman Gervin fan,” Bayless posted to X.com, formerly known as Twitter. “And I’m offended Caleb and Co. are trying to steal George’s all-time great nickname. I unleash on today’s Arena Gridiron 2:30 E.”

Williams did not stay silent, responding directly to Bayless online and pushing back strongly against the accusation, while also questioning the language used to describe his trademark efforts.

“Idc about where your fandom stands,” Williams said, in response. “I was trying give you and everyone else the benefit of the doubt. About knowing business and being smart about it.

“But I guess not. Foolish of me! Also words matter Skip Bayless. ‘Steal’. Enjoy that podcast.”

Could Williams win 2026 NFL MVP?

Beyond the legal wrangling, the decision over who ultimately secures the “Iceman” trademark will rest with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with the review process expected to take considerable time before any resolution is reached.

Meanwhile, Williams‘ performances on the field continue to drive his growing profile, with analysts beginning to suggest that he could emerge as a genuine contender for the NFL MVP award in the 2026 season.

Among those backing him is Seth Rollins, who outlined a detailed case built on team improvements, coaching influence, and the quarterback’s ability to deliver under pressure.

Rollins highlighted Chicago’s strengthened offensive line, praising key additions and development, while also pointing to a deep pool of receiving talent that provides Williams with multiple reliable options in high-stakes situations.

He also singled out head coach Ben Johnson, describing him as a transformative presence capable of maximising quarterback performance and fostering a competitive, high-energy environment within the team structure.

“If there is anybody who is ready for the spotlight, it is my guy,” Rollins said. “The number one reason that Caleb Williams will be in the MVP conversation is that he’s the Ice Man.

“He came into his own this season. And you saw it in real time, week after week, comeback after comeback. Every week, he’d bring them back, drive after drive.

“This franchise has gone from the worst in the NFC North to NFC North Kings, and it’s all because of 18.”
