Since joining the Indiana Fever, Sophie Cunningham has earned the respect and affection of her teammates and fans thanks to her unmistakable competitive spirit, humor, and leadership.
That’s why, just over two weeks after Stephanie White’s team ended its playoff run, fans have made a big request for next season.
Fans want Sophie in 2026
After making her WNBA debut in 2019 with the Phoenix Mercury, the 29-year-old point guard had her first year with the Indiana Fever, although it did not end as she had hoped after suffering a torn MCL in her right knee in August, forcing her to end her season.
Sophie closed out her first year in Indiana averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 30 games played before her injury and was a key player on the road to the playoffs.
However, in Indiana, only Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Makayla Timpson have contracts through 2026. Sophie, like the rest of her teammates, is a free agent this offseason, so Fever fans didn’t hesitate to make their voices heard.
On their official X account (formerly Twitter), the team announced a major milestone in the 29-year-old star’s career: “Sharpshooter. Sophie Cunningham recorded career-bests in FG% and 3P% (third in the WNBA) in year 7,” they wrote alongside a video of the point guard’s best plays.
Taking advantage of this post, Fever fans made it known that they want Sophie to remain with the team next year:
“Bring her back,” one of them requested. “That’s why she needs to stay,” said another. “Re-sign her!!!” exclaimed another fan. “She’s really a great addition to Fever. Bring her back next season,” commented another user. “Love Sophie. Sure hope she is still on the Fever Team in 26,” wrote a fifth fan.
Although she is still recovering from her injury, Cunningham is expected to return to the court for the start of next season. The league’s collective bargaining agreement expires on October 31, and Sophie could benefit from salary improvements.
However, despite requests from fans, neither Indiana nor Cunningham herself have confirmed whether or not she will remain with the team. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sophie is still part of the Fever next season.
