That’s why the team has opted to keep Ohtani as a designated hitter, even if it means defensive weaknesses.
Shohei Ohtani continues to shine with the bat
Despite the tactical complications, Shohei Ohtani is having a spectacular season. He is hitting .284/.392/.623 with a 1.015 OPS and leads the National League in home runs along with Kyle Schwarber with 44 home runs. His offensive impact is so great that the team prefers to take defensive risks rather than lose his production at the plate.
The weight of history and health
During his time in the NPB with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Ohtani played as an outfielder on 62 occasions. However, in MLB he has been used exclusively as a DH due to the physical demands of his role as a two-way player. Although he is not currently pitching, the Dodgers are still protecting his health to avoid injury.
Teoscar Hernandez, the other piece of the puzzle
The problem is compounded by the presence of Teoscar Hernandez, who also brings power to the lineup. Taking him out so that Ohtani can play in the field is not a viable option for manager Dave Roberts. Therefore, the team has opted to keep both in the lineup, even if it means sacrificing defense.
