Shohei Ohtani shines on the mound and with the bat in Dodgers’ victory over Reds

After a worrying outing against the Colorado Rockies, where he could barely pitch four innings and suffered his first loss of the season, Ohtani responded with authority. This time he worked five innings with just one run allowed and nine strikeouts, signing his longest start of the year and securing the win.

On the mound, his only mistake came in the third inning, when Noelvi Marte hit a solo home run. Even so, he showed poise to leave runners on base in earlier innings and retired his last eight opponents faced. With his repertoire, which included 23 curves -26% of his pitches, Ohtani surprised by using a pitch he had only used 11 times all season, striking out four with that weapon.

Ohtani shone in all facets

The Japanese also made his mark at the plate. He was the first Dodger to reach base after opposing starter Nick Lodolo retired the first nine batters in a row. His offensive contribution allowed Los Angeles to take control of the game.

After finishing his work in the fifth inning with a strikeout of TJ Friedl, Ohtani received a standing ovation from the Los Angeles crowd. However, he could barely enjoy it, as he had to open the offensive turn and had to run to the dugout to change quickly. A perfect reflection of what it means to be a two-way star in MLB.

With this victory, the Dodgers swept the series against the Reds and consolidated their lead in the National League West, with a two-game advantage over the San Diego Padres. The team hopes that Ohtani will continue to show his talent in both roles, being a key player in the search for another successful postseason for the Los Angeles franchise.
