Shohei Ohtani sacrifices himself to help the Dodgers in the midst of a crisis

Shohei Ohtani once again showed why he is one of the most beloved players not only for the Dodgers but also in MLB, as he prioritised the collective and took to the mound to help with some pitches for the Los Angeles team

Although he is known for sticking to a rigorous preparation plan, the three-time MVP broke with his routine to cover an emergency in the Angels’ rotation.

The team was coming off a three-game losing streak and, to make matters worse, starter Tyler Glasnow suffered back discomfort just hours before the game against the Baltimore Orioles.

It was then that Ohtani raised his hand to take the mound, despite the fact that just a few days earlier he had been removed from a scheduled start due to a cold.

“This is one of those times when you have to step away from your routine and be a good teammate,” Ohtani said through his interpreter, recalling that in his absence, young Emmet Sheehan had already done a good job.

The move surprised fans and analysts, as Ohtani‘s return as a pitcher is being carefully managed following his recovery process. However, the Japanese looked solid over 3.2 innings, recording five strikeouts and allowing no runs or walks.

Although the Dodgers eventually fell by a walk-off in the ninth inning, his presence on the mound gave the rotation a breather and demonstrated leadership at a critical moment.

Dave Roberts praises Shohei Ohtani’s attitude

Manager Dave Roberts praised his star’s attitude: “Shohei wants to lift us up. I really admire that he’s willing to adjust his plan and be of service to the team,” he said after the game.

However, this did not prevent the Dodgers’ fifth consecutive defeat, but the gesture had enormous symbolic value. In a long season, with its ups and downs and inevitable injuries, having a figure capable of adapting to the needs of the club sends a message of unity and commitment.

In a division as competitive as the American League West, every game counts, and the ability of leaders to step up can make all the difference in October. Shohei Ohtani, already considered a phenomenon for his dual role as a hitter and pitcher, also demonstrated that his influence goes far beyond what the statistics reflect.
