Shohei Ohtani is one of the biggest stars in MLB today, with millions of fans around the world.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Shohei Ohtani became the first Los Angeles Dodgers star to sell a baseball card for more than a million dollars.
“Last night, Shohei Ohtani’s 2024 Topps Dynasty Black 1/1 Relic ’50/50′ sold for $1,067,500, a record price for any Ohtani card,” reads the Heritage Auctions Sports post.
The auction house’s website states that the design combines the MLB logo from an Ohtani game-used pant (authenticated by Major League Baseball) with a gold permanent marker autograph from baseball’s star of the moment and future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
He added that the aesthetics of Ohtani’s card will draw accurate comparisons to Michael Jordan’s famous “Logoman” card, which dominated the trade press with its multimillion-dollar sale last year
ESPN remembers that it is the highest price paid for an Ohtani card, as the past record was $533,140 paid for a 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs Orange Refractor rookie card, numbered to 25, in November.
The $1.067 million paid marks a milestone for the Japanese superstar’s collectibles, an amount that came close to the $1.1 million paid for a Paul Skenes MLB debut patch autographed card, according to Total Pro Sports.
The card’s value was boosted by Ohtani’s historic 50/50 season, as he hit 50 home runs and stole 50 bases in a single season, the sports outlet details.
