Shohei Ohtani breaks silence on batting drought when Dave Roberts and Dodgers need him most

The National League Championship Series is being played in Major League Baseball with the two best teams in the zone: Brewers andDodgers. Dave Roberts’ team knows that a 2-0 lead is a comfortable result, yes, but it is not so comfortable as to relax against a team of great figures such as Milwaukee. And it is for this reason that – speaking of stars – Shohei Ohtani must wake up with his batting.

Amid a difficult postseason, the Japanese star has decided to speak out about his struggles at the plate in the 2025 MLB Playoffs. Ohtani has been the center of attention, not only because of his multimillion-dollar contract, but also because of his performance on the diamond. With a .147 batting average in 34 at-bats, Ohtani has been the subject of criticism, but his focus remains clear: to improve the quality of his at-bats.

Dave Roberts ‘covers’ Shohei Ohtani

Ohtani commented on the strategy of opposing teams: “I think it makes sense strategically on their side to use a lot of left-handed pitchers against me. All I’m focused on is having better quality at-bats“. Despite the difficulties, his manager, Dave Roberts, has come to his defense, stressing that Ohtani’s contributions cannot be measured solely by his batting average.

His contributions cannot be measured solely by his batting average

Roberts has been clear that Ohtani remains a key piece of the team. “His contributions cannot be evaluated solely by his batting average. Ohtani is getting on base, getting on base and creating opportunities for Mookie Betts to drive in runs. That is also a clear contribution to the team“, said Roberts, highlighting the player’s intangible value.

Shohei Ohtani achieves unprecedented MLB Playoff record

According to Swing Completo’s Statistical Center, Shohei Ohtani became the first player in postseason history to act as a starting pitcher, hit at least one home run and steal a base in the same postseason. In this way, he once again leaves his name imprinted in October, increasing his legacy among the greatest.

But Ohtani is also one of three players who have a postseason career with one start, one home run and one stolen base, joining legend Babe Ruth, who did so between 1915 and 1932 (Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees) and Jake Arrieta between 2015 and 2017 (Chicago Cubs), respectively. It’s no secret the offensive slump the Japanese is going through in this MLB 2025 postseason.
