Patrick Mahomes describes Shedeur Sanders snub in the 2025 NFL Draft as ‘crazy’ as the ex-Colorado Buffaloes‘ start enters the third day without being picked up by any of the 32 teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs.
To be fair, the Chiefs have no reason to be in for a quarterback when they possess a two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion; tipped for the greatest of all-time conversation.
But the same cannot be said for the likes of the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints heading into the current draft, yet none of them have picked up the 22-year-old.
Sanders finds himself looked over by every single franchise four times now and his prospects of becoming a professional footballer find themselves on the ropes, a stunning transformation of fortunes for someone destined as a first-rounder.
And it’s not only Shedeur shocked by the developments as Mahomes weighs in with a simple one-word answer that perfectly captures the ridiculousness of the unfolding situation.
“Crazy,” Mahomes wrote on X.com, formerly Twitter, after seeing quarterbacks Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel picked ahead of Sanders.
Sanders will have one more chance to be picked on Saturday, April 26 before the NFL Draft closes and he goes undrafted. If that happens, he can still sign a professional contract, but on more unfavorable terms. He could also join a practise squad.
Stephen A. Smith hits out at 32 NFL teams
It’s not just Mahomes shocked at how the situation is playing out for Sanders, with fans and even pundits equally astonished that he’s still available for someone to pick up after two nights.
And one of those pundits, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, strikes out at the sport for what he perceives as a very conscious decision not to pick the young talent, who passed for 4134 yards and 37 touchdowns in the NCAA in 2024/25.
“This is a damn disgrace,” Smith posted to X.com. “How in the hell is @Shedeur not off the board, not drafted yet.
“Y’all still think this doesn’t have anything to do with teams hatin on @DeionSanders. This kid is a first rounder.
“In a different way, this is [Colin] Kaepernick all over again…..being kept out. A damn disgrace. I don’t care what anyone says!”
Fans will remember Kaepernick for becoming blacklisted in the NFL for taking a knee during the United States’ national anthem whilst playing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.
A quarterback with 85 passing and rushing touchdowns to his name, his protest was against police brutality and racial equality within the nation.
The gesture spelled the end of his career as he was released at the end of the season and nobody wanted to sign him because of perceived controversy around his symbolic protest.
