Shilo Sanders takes a huge blow as last NFL ties disappear

Shilo Sanders arrived in the NFL with promise as a hard-hitting safety and the eldest son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, ready to carve out his own path. But the narrative has taken a sharp turn.

After a preseason incident and a rapid exit from Tampa Bay, Sanders now finds himself erased – both from NFL rosters and even the digital world of Madden 26.

Much was made of his virtual presence: in Madden 26, Sanders was rated with statistics such as 78 speed, 65 strength, 81 agility, 79 change of direction, 94 injury, and 58 awareness, and held an overall rating of 67.

But following his release by the Buccaneers, EA Sports quietly removed him from the game’s roster entirely, effectively sweeping his digital footprint from one of the most prominent platforms that fans engage with.

His on-field exit came after an altercation during Tampa Bay’s preseason matchup with the Buffalo Bills. After being flagged for pass interference, Sanders threw a punch at tight end Zach Davidson and was ejected. The Buccaneers wasted little time.

Head coach Todd Bowles publicly condemned the move, calling it “inexcusable,” and the next day Sanders was waived from the 53-man roster. He had played 83 defensive snaps in preseason action and showed flashes of burst and aggression, but that one mistake became fatal in a league with little margin for error.

The uphill climb ahead

Once waived, Sanders turned to the waiver process, but no team stepped in to claim him. Several franchises have tested him out without committing. The Baltimore Ravens, seeking upgrades in their secondary, instead opted for other options.

The San Francisco 49ers hosted a workout but did not extend an offer. Other teams, such as the Commanders and Jaguars, have also passed. With every refusal, the window is closing on his NFL prospects.

This entire episode has deeper implications – the removal from Madden 26 signals a symbolic erasure of his presence in the league’s ecosystem. For many players, being featured in Madden is a rite of passage, a cultural signifier of membership in the NFL’s world. To lose that is more than cosmetic; it’s a reminder of how rapidly doors can close in this business.

Yet the story is not definitively over. Sanders still has options, although they’re narrowing. His agent is reportedly pushing for practice squad roles or a chance in alternative leagues like the UFL. The Canadian Football League may also offer a lifeline: the Toronto Argonauts hold his playing rights north of the border.

Meanwhile, his father, Deion, has stood by him publicly, expressing pride and confidence that his son will navigate this chapter, football or not.

For now, Shilo watches others get the call. He remains in an NFL limbo, attempting to reconcile talent, temperament, and opportunity – all under the shadow of a storied last name.

The removal from Madden is more than a footnote; it’s a stark marker in his professional timeline. Whether or not he recovers from this setback will define his legacy in the world his father once dominated.
