Shilo Sanders NFL Draft: What round do projections place the Colorado safety?

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is grabbing most of the headlines ahead of the NFL Draft as a potential franchise quarterback and ready to be selected in the first round, unlike his older brother Shilo Sanders, who could also be on his way to a solid professional football career.

Shilo’s chances of being selected increased when he ran an impressive 4.52-second 40-yard dash at Colorado’s pro day.

While he did not reach the goal expected by his father and Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, after the former NFL player and Hall of Famer had promised to buy him a new car if he ran 4.4 seconds or less, it is an achievement that should excite scouts about his professional potential.

What round could Shilo Sanders be drafted in?

Although he is not among the top 200 prospects in the class of 2025 nor did he receive an invitation to the scouting combine, Sanders clearly demonstrated that he has the speed to succeed in the NFL. He is projected to be selected in the fourth or fifth round, and there is talk that he could strengthen the defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers, a franchise that is also aiming to acquire his brother Shedeur as a passer.

The safety also has a good size (he is 1.83 m tall and weighs 88 kg), a good nose for the ball and a great ability to generate turnovers.

He has great talent and has the potential to play either safety position in the NFL.

However, something that plays against him is his age (he turned 25 in February) and his injury history, which includes a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a shoulder injury that cut short his final college season.

He began his college career in 2019 at South Carolina and went on to stints at Jackson State and Colorado, playing a total of 21 games with the Buffaloes since transferring before the 2023 season.

If Sanders can perfect his tackling technique, fine-tune his play recognition and improve his man coverage, he could be a quality deep safety early in his NFL career.

He may not have much potential and his ceiling is relatively low, but Sanders is a safe bet from the third day for any team that needs to bolster its defensive backfield.
