Shilo Sanders, son of football legend Deion Sanders, has found himself fighting a legal battle that dates back to an incident when he was just 15 years old.
Now, as he looks to carve out his own career in the NFL, a recent development in court could provide him the breathing space he needs to focus on football.
The controversy began in 2015 when Shilo, then a freshman at FOCUS Academies in Dallas, reportedly assaulted security guard John Darjean over a confiscated phone.
The situation spiraled into a lawsuit that was settled in 2022, with a Dallas civil court ordering Shilo Sanders to pay Darjean a staggering $11.89 million in damages. Facing such a hefty penalty, Shilo filed for bankruptcy in 2023, citing the need for a “fresh start” as he prepared to chase his NFL dreams.
However, Darjean‘s legal team responded by filing complaints against the bankruptcy claim, arguing that it was simply a ploy to escape financial responsibility. The case has been ongoing, but now, a new twist has given Shilo a potential advantage.
Court Grants Shilo Sanders Limited Financial Privacy
The biggest sticking point in the case has been Shilo Sanders‘ attempt to keep his financial records from 2023 private. His attorney, Keri Riley, argued that if his spending habits-such as business deals, NIL earnings, and personal transactions-were made public, it would damage his reputation and future earning potential. Riley insisted that social media backlash could severely impact his ability to secure financial opportunities in the NFL.
Judge Michael E. Romero ultimately granted Shilo a “limited protective order”, acknowledging that there was “good cause” for some level of privacy.
According to a report by USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, the judge’s five-page protective order stated, “designated discovery material may not be used for any other purpose other than that is related to the case.” However, Romero also made it clear that if any of the evidence makes its way into the public court record, it could be shared on social media.
Darjean‘s legal team remains unsatisfied, believing Shilo shouldn’t receive special treatment just because he’s a high-profile figure. Yet, with this hurdle now cleared, the case is set to move forward.
What Does This Mean for Shilo’s NFL Future?
Shilo Sanders‘ NFL aspirations are very much hanging in the balance. As a safety, he has not generated the same level of attention as his brother, Shedeur Sanders, who is considered a consensus lottery pick. Unfortunately, Shilo was not invited to the NFL Combine, leaving his Pro Day on April 4 as his last opportunity to prove his worth to scouts and NFL teams.
The rumor mill suggests Shilo is a long shot for the draft, but he still has a fighting chance to make an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent. Some speculate that if a team signs his brother Shedeur, they might take a chance on Shilo as well.
The concept of nepotism has been floating around, especially with comparisons to how Bronny James made his way onto the Lakers roster thanks to LeBron James‘ influence.
