The Cleveland Browns have a big challenge ahead of the new season. Despite the passing of days, it has not yet decided who of the four candidates it has will be the team’s QB1.
With Deshaun Watson still recovering from his Achilles injury, veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett could be their safest option, as they already know them.
However, two newcomers made the team this year thanks to the NFL Draft: Dillon Gabriel, the 94th pick, and Shedeur Sanders at 144th.
Although Cleveland has yet to release its official QB1, the four candidates have no respite from speculation. Veteran Joe Flacco was recently asked if he would have passed on his knowledge with his teammates.
Although Joe himself stated that he is just another player and not a mentor, he made clear his role on the team: “I’m not a mentor. I play football… it’s not necessarily my job to make sure [teammates] listen to me. Hey, hopefully you have a really good relationship with the guys that are in the room, and you naturally want to do that.“
However, Flacco is generous with his teammates and shares his wisdom with them during the team’s minicamp, especially to 23-year-old star Shedeur Sanders.
Flacco’s advice to Shedeur
Recently, a reporter thought she saw Joe and Shedeur sharing advice – and she was right!
That’s what the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback confirmed to the press, saying Flacco was explaining to him “How to get through the reads quicker and those type of things.“
I asked him, ‘Hey, let me know what you think, what I need to do.’ He’s seen it and he’s played it. He’s a pro. I’d be dumb, I’d be a fool not to get insight from somebody that has success over all the years that he has.
And even though they’re both competing for the QB1 job, this humbling moment shows Sanders’ admiration and respect for his teammate and Flacco’s solidarity in continuing to empower Shedeur.
