Shedeur Sanders’ status heading into last two Browns preseason games gets a major update

Just as soon as Shedeur Sanders‘ hype train was well and truly rolling, it came to a harsh halt. After delivering an impressive performance in his Cleveland Browns debut, Sanders picked up an injury during a midweek practice that put his playing status in question. It was a tough pill to swallow right as the rookie had made huge progress.

From the sound of it, Sanders’ injury isn’t overly serious. But it comes at a brutal time, with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel reportedly set to come back from his own injury to start the second preseason game. Kenny Pickett is still rehabbing a hamstring injury, while Joe Flacco doesn’t need preseason reps in the eyes of head coach Kevin Stefanski. Sanders looked to have made up ground on Gabriel, but now he may lose it.

Sanders could have a chance to make it back up sooner than later, though. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the team believes Sanders could return to practice next week and play in the final preseason game.

That confirms Sanders won’t play when the Browns take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. It will be Gabriel’s show, at least until he cedes the work to Tyler Huntley.

Sanders will now have some time to heal from the oblique injury he suffered. Given how well he played in his debut, Sanders doesn’t necessarily have to rush back in order to to impress the coaching staff to keep a roster spot. He has practically already secured it.
