Shedeur Sanders started a battle on the Browns he didn’t see coming between Joe Flacco and Deshaun Watson

Shedeur Sanders may not know it yet, but the real fight for his NFL future has already begun, and it’s not just about football. It’s a quiet battle inside the Cleveland Browns quarterback room, where mentorship, leadership styles, and egos are clashing harder than helmets on a blitz.

On one side, you have Deshaun Watson, injured but far from absent. The Browns’ starting QB has been a steady, supportive presence, especially for the rookies. He’s taken both Sanders and fellow draft pick Dillon Gabriel “under his wing,” spending time with them on and off the field, answering questions, guiding film sessions, and acting as the calm veteran voice every young QB hopes to find in their first NFL locker room.

On the other side, Joe Flacco. The Super Bowl champ made it clear from day one, he’s not here to babysit. “I’m not a mentor,” Flacco said bluntly. “I play football.” Sure, he’s willing to talk shop if the rookies ask, but there’s no follow-up, no extra effort. For Shedeur, that creates a sharp contrast – two NFL vets, two very different approaches. One opens the door, the other leaves it cracked, if you’re lucky.

Shedeur Sanders faces confidence-shaking dynamic

It’s the kind of dynamic that can shape, or shake, a rookie’s confidence. Especially when that rookie is already carrying a chip on his shoulder. Shedeur Sanders was supposed to be a first-round talent. Instead, he fell all the way to pick No. 144. Now he’s in a four-man battle for the starting job with Flacco, Gabriel, and Kenny Pickett, and he’s got to fight his way up from the bottom.

Cleveland’s quarterback room has quietly become one of the most unpredictable in the league, a pressure cooker of talent, expectations, and clashing philosophies. The Browns took a big swing in the draft, and now they’re watching to see if anyone connects. For Shedeur, it’s a chance to prove himself. For Watson, it’s a shot at redemption, not just for his injury, but for everything else. And for Flacco, it’s business as usual, no mentoring, just football.
