Shedeur Sanders is one of the hardest missions of his football life: making the final 53-man roster for the Cleveland Browns.

The former standout with the Colorado Buffaloes has a very difficult challenge ahead: he’s going against a veteran quarterback that has already won a Super Bowl in Joe Flacco; a former 2022 first round pick in Kenny Pickett, and a rookie QB in Gabriel Dillon.

At least one of them is getting cut, and that’s not even counting the fact that star quarterback Deshaun Watson is not part of the competition for now, due to an Achiles injury suffered during the 2024 regular season that’s going to keep the veteran away from the field for some significant time.

Shedeur Sanders‘ rookie minicamp’s performance is being scrutinized as he was the No.1 pick overall, even though that was actually former Miami Hurricanes standout Cam Ward, who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans to be their franchise player for the foreseeable future.

After practice, Shedeur was asked how has he been able to keep his spirit up, despite the fact that he fell all the way to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he got picked after quarterbacks that analysts and fans think are not up to his level of greatness.

“You just gotta step back and look at life, like, you’re in a great situation overall that you are able to be healthy. That’s one thing going through, even with my brother going through an injury and my pops and everybody in the family, like you value life and you value opportunity and just waking up everyday a different way, so that’s kind of why it’s nothing for me to really, no matter what in any situation, I can’t really be fazed by it,” Shedeur said.

Shedeur is focused on making the team

Andrew Berry, executive vice president of football operations and general manager of the Cleveland Browns, said that the team viewed Shedeur Sanders as a highly accurate pocket passer and a player who protects the ball. He also highlighted Sanders‘ arm strength and mobility as strong physical characteristics.

Sanders has put the draft behind him and now is keeping his focus on learning the Browns‘ playbook and acclimating himself to his new team and the city of Cleveland. He has spent time around the other rookies over the first two days of camp, and has said that he has has enjoyed being back in a team environment.

With the start of rookie minicamp also comes the conversations centered around the quarterback position. Shedeur recognizes that he is now a part of a four-man QB competition. However, he holds the mindset of proving himself right. “In life and everything is just me versus me,” Sanders said. “I can’t control any other decision besides that, so I just try to be my best self.”
