The competition for starting quarterback on the Cleveland Browns’ roster has taken an intriguing turn. Initially, Shedeur Sanders found himself on the outside of first-team reps, but his perseverance and undeniable talent have thrust him into the conversation.

Despite being a rookie in a crowded quarterback room, Sanders has been proving he belongs at this level.

Sanders, who knew that competing in a room with established quarterbacks would be challenging, remained humble but determined.

“I know a lot of people want the opportunity to be at this level, and I’m here, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity,” he explained. However, what Sanders might not have anticipated was how quickly he would make his mark during training camp.

Sanders’ standout performance

A key moment in Sanders’ rise came during a Saturday training camp session, where he posted an impressive performance, completing 8 of 11 passes with 3 touchdowns. His standout performance drew praise from both teammates and coaches.

One of the most memorable plays occurred when Sanders connected with Diontae Johnson for a touchdown. Johnson had perfectly run behind the linebacker, and Sanders threaded the needle with a precise pass. It was a textbook play that showcased Sanders’ potential.

However, despite this flash of brilliance, head coach Kevin Stefanski maintained his position and kept Sanders off the starting quarterback role.

Still, an unfortunate injury to starting QB Kenny Pickett, who sustained a hamstring strain, has created a window for Sanders to step in. Pickett is expected to miss an undetermined amount of time, which could push Sanders into a larger role with the team. The injury to Pickett has left many wondering if Stefanski will change his quarterback depth chart.

Sanders’ performance wasn’t a fluke. In a subsequent practice, Sanders again showed poise under pressure, evading defenders and making accurate throws. In a video posted by insider Brad Stainbrook, Sanders was seen eluding a defensive rush and delivering a looping pass to Gage Larvadain for yet another touchdown.

The play was a perfect display of Sanders’ calm under pressure, something many rookies struggle with. The crowd’s reaction was one of admiration, but the response online was mixed, with some fans criticizing missed tackles during the play.

Despite the critiques, Sanders’ confidence continues to grow. His ability to perform under pressure and execute plays with precision is making him an increasingly important part of the team’s future.

Myles Garrett backs Sanders as QB1

Sanders has also found an ally in Myles Garrett, the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. After practice, Garrett has been seen working closely with Sanders, helping him refine his snap exchanges with center Brady Latham.

Garrett has praised the camaraderie within the quarterback room, saying, “The guys are not afraid to make a mistake, go out there and try to make a play… they’re not afraid to seek each other out and make each other better.”

With Garrett’s support and a growing confidence in his abilities, Sanders is positioning himself as a real contender in the quarterback battle. As the injury to Pickett continues to leave uncertainty, Sanders may have a real opportunity to prove himself as the Browns’ starting quarterback in the near future.
