Shedeur Sanders set for a reality check at Browns camp: “He’s got a ways to go”

The real battle-the one that truly counts in the race for the starting quarterback job-is about to begin. Preseason is drawing near, and with it, the likely debut of Shedeur Sanders on an NFL field. In this fierce competition against veterans Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, Sanders must prove he has what it takes to make the team and secure a spot on the final 53-man roster for the 2025 season.

Much has been said about the youngest son of Deion Sanders and his chances of earning the QB1 role with the Cleveland Browns during his rookie year.

Now, analyst Jeremy Fowler has added his take on the situation.

During an appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live, Fowler shared his thoughts on the ongoing quarterback battle in Cleveland and the challenges Sanders faces in earning the starting nod.

The first week or two at training camp, I expect the Browns to run similarly to the spring, OTAs, and minicamp,”… “And then Kevin Stefanski, the head coach, will crystallize the pecking order…

He continued:

Shedeur Sanders did impress in the spring,”… “He was willing to throw the ball in tight windows. He was accurate, but when you ask people with Cleveland, they do bring some caution there. We’re like, look, ‘He was working against the third team a lot. Not much of a pass rush.’ He’s got a ways to go and so that will probably show early on in camp.

Browns insiders say there’s good news for Shedeur

As has been mentioned before, Sanders is dealing with a great deal of uncertainty this offseason since joining the team. There’s no guarantee he’ll stay with the Browns. Rumors surrounding his future have swirled daily, with some suggesting he’s in trouble and others claiming he’s making a strong impression.

Many voices say Kevin Stefanski and his coaching staff remain unconvinced. Others, however, claim his work is being well received. Still, there’s a lingering concern among Browns fans: while Sanders has performed well, it’s mostly come against third-string defenders, meaning he hasn’t truly been tested against top competition.

Despite the uncertainty, team insider Mary Kay Cabot recently offered a positive update regarding Sanders’ status.

The good news for Shedeur, the Browns’ fifth-round pick out of Colorado, is that he performed so well over the final two weeks of spring ball that he’ll come back for training camp with a legitimate shot to compete for the starting job, at least in the early going.

Cleveland’s offense, and the team as a whole, has much to improve. Last season, the Browns finished with a dismal 3-14 record, far from the expectations many had for them. For now, Shedeur must concentrate on his performance to try to convince coaches and deserve an opportunity with the team.
