Shedeur Sanders receives the news he’s been waiting for with the Browns: the offensive coordinator announces his imminent debut

The 2025 season has delivered a rollercoaster journey for rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. After spending much of training camp and the early part of the year behind veteran Dillon Gabriel and the recently-traded Joe Flacco, Sanders finally heard the news he’s been waiting for.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees teased that his debut may be just around the corner – a signal that the organization remains invested in his future.

Rees praised Sanders in a recent press conference, stating: “There will be opportunities moving forward. You want to put young quarterbacks in really positive situations where they can build confidence.

Shedeur’s been working hard and knows he needs to be ready at a moment’s notice.” His comments suggest the Browns are preparing to expand Sanders’ role beyond occasional spells.

This development follows the trade of Flacco to the Bengals and Dillon Gabriel‘s elevation to starter – two moves that have reshaped the Browns’ quarterback room.

Sanders, originally the fifth-round pick in 2025, has risen up the depth chart despite limited in-game reps. His ascension underscores the team’s commitment to developing him methodically while keeping playoff hopes alive.

Setting the stage for a rookie debut

While Rees didn’t specify a start date for Sanders, he did offer clarity on the mindset the coaching staff is promoting: build readiness, maintain poise, and execute when given the chance.

“He’s seeing the coverage, trusting what he’s seeing, and letting it go,” Rees added, signaling trust in Sanders’ mental and physical preparation.

For Shedeur, the pressure now shifts from “will he get his shot?” to “when will he take it?” His mantra lately has been simple: “I’m ready to play.” With the Browns’ offense underperforming and a playoff window narrowing, the timing may align for Sanders to step into a meaningful role.

The team remains cautious – yet hopeful – and the message is clear: when the moment comes, he’ll be prepared to seize it.

As Cleveland navigates the balance between veteran stability and rookie potential, Sanders may soon become more than just the quarterback-in-waiting – he could become the quarterback-in-action.

Fans, analysts, and the Browns‘ inner circle will be watching closely. The debut is no longer whispered – it’s looming.
