Shedeur Sanders on the hot seat as Browns’ ruthless history looms

In the Cleveland Browns, it doesn’t matter how good your season was-even we could say your roster spot isn’t fully secure. That’s what history suggests when discussing a franchise still searching for its best version amid constant changes, especially at the quarterback position.

Faced with this panorama, and despite being considered the best quarterback currently in Cleveland, Shedeur Sanders does not have his place guaranteed. A latent threat looms from the NFL Draft, the same stage where Sanders himself went from being viewed as a top NFL prospect to falling into the later rounds.

Andrew Berry does not guarantee a spot for Shedeur Sanders

Last February, Andrew Berry, general manager of the Browns, was questioned about his mindset of selecting multiple quarterbacks in the NFL Draft. His response was direct:

“It’s the most important position.”

In other words, as happened last year, there remains a real possibility that Cleveland could target another quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, especially considering the team holds multiple draft picks and valuable draft capital.

Last season, the Browns quarterback room opened with four players but eventually narrowed to two rookies. Although the year began with veteran Joe Flacco as the starter, Kenny Pickett was traded to the Raiders, opening the door for Dillon Gabriel to take control of the offense.

After suffering a concussion in the final third of the season, Gabriel stepped aside for Shedeur Sanders, who closed out the year and proved he could elevate the offense and compete for the starting quarterback job.

NFL Draft and free agency pressure

Even so, Sanders continues to face pressure in what could become a heated quarterback competition. His starting role is not guaranteed heading into the offseason.

Malik Willis has recently been linked to Cleveland in NFL free agency, while the upcoming NFL Draft presents additional competition.

Prospects such as Cole Payton (North Dakota State), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), who disappointed last season, and Drew Allar (Penn State), who struggled with inconsistency before suffering an ACL injury, are potential draft targets.

Andrew Berry has not finalized any decisions, but one thing is clear: in the Cleveland Browns quarterback battle, nothing is guaranteed. With draft capital, free agency options, and internal competition all in play, anything can happen inside the organization as they prepare for the next NFL season.
