The OTAs have begun at the Cleveland Browns’ camp, and naturally, the focus was on the quarterbacks-especially because the high-profile Shedeur Sanders is competing for a spot alongside three other quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.
Shedeur Sanders began as the fourth quarterback-basically the last option-but today, he was the best of all at the Browns’ camp. According to a report from ESPN, the former University of Colorado quarterback completed 7 of 9 passes, with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. The other three quarterbacks fell behind those numbers.
Dillon Gabriel, also a rookie who was selected in the third round of the past Draft, completed 11 of 16 passes, with two touchdowns and one interception. Meanwhile, the more experienced Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett were far behind. Flacco only managed 9 of 14 passes with one touchdown, while Pickett had the weakest performance, completing 9 of 16 with no touchdowns.
Shedeur Sanders is trying to earn his spot
Based on the stats mentioned, Shedeur Sanders will clearly have a chance to earn a spot on the roster, although he has an uphill battle after being selected in the fifth round of the recent draft. He’s also competing against players like Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, who were first-round picks, while fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel was selected in the third round.
It’s worth remembering that Shedeur Sanders was once projected to be a first-round pick and enter the NFL as a star, but his draft stock fell, and now he has to prove his talent to earn a spot in the league. ESPN analyst Daniel Oyefusi noted that Sanders doesn’t have a guaranteed place in Cleveland.
“Being selected after Gabriel adds an element of uncertainty to Sanders’ rookie season. Although many ranked him above the third-round pick before the draft, Sanders will likely begin training camp as the fourth quarterback on the depth chart and does not have a secured spot on the team,” Oyefusi said.
For now, Shedeur Sanders made a strong impression in the first OTA practice, but it’s just one day of results. As the practices continue, the competition will intensify, and we’ll see what Deion Sanders’ son is really made of.
