Shedeur Sanders learns earth-shattering reality after absence from Browns practice

Shedeur Sanders, the highly watched rookie quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, received a reality check in his first NFL training camp after his injury-related absence.

The former Colorado star and son of Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, was forced to miss valuable practice time due to arm soreness, and that absence is already costing him. As team drills moved forward without him, his spot in the quarterback depth chart became even more uncertain.

Over the weekend, Sanders was sidelined from team activities, with the Browns medical staff keeping him out to avoid aggravating his throwing arm.

It was a cautious move, but the timing couldn’t have been worse. Training camp is where rookies build trust, develop chemistry, and earn reps. For Sanders, those missed days meant lost ground, and others are taking full advantage of the opportunity.

In his absence, veteran Joe Flacco took over the majority of reps, while fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel also saw increased action. Kenny Pickett, who has also been managing a hamstring injury, was limited, but still present.

Sanders, meanwhile, was seen tossing the ball to staff rather than participating with receivers, a clear sign that his path to becoming a starter – or even securing a roster spot – is far from certain.

Missed reps and opportunities

Sanders entered the league with name recognition and plenty of buzz, but he fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft – a drop that surprised many.

Now, just weeks into training camp, it’s becoming clear that his NFL journey will require more than hype. The Browns’ quarterback room is crowded, and decisions are being made every day based on availability, consistency, and maturity.

One NFL insider noted that Sanders “has a lot of ground to make up” and emphasized how critical these early reps are for rookies. His absence from competitive drills not only puts him behind in learning the offense, but it also prevents him from proving his potential under pressure.

There have already been warning signs. Sanders was reportedly involved in a couple of off-field incidents, including speeding violations, which prompted criticism from team executives. While not career-threatening, these moments add to concerns about his readiness and focus at the professional level.

Sanders not throwing in the towel

Despite these hurdles, there’s no indication that Sanders is giving up. He’s been professional in his approach, attentive in meetings, and quiet in his demeanor. Teammates and coaches have noted that he’s staying engaged and doing what he can while limited. That discipline may help, but it won’t replace game reps.

Kenny Pickett, speaking about his own absence from drills, admitted, “When you’re not in a competition, I think you’re losing ground.” The same logic applies to Sanders. With preseason games approaching and only so many spots available, he must return quickly and make an impact-or risk becoming an early casualty of the roster shuffle.

Looking ahead, the Browns face tough choices. Keeping four quarterbacks into the regular season is unlikely. Sanders still has time to turn things around, but the pressure is rising. Every day he sits, the gap widens between him and those climbing the ladder.

For Shedeur Sanders, this is more than just a sore arm. It’s a crucial moment in his football career – and the margin for error is getting thinner by the day.
