There’s no doubt that Shedeur Sanders has made a strong impression during the Cleveland Browns’ training camp. The quarterback has had to work hard to prove his worth, earn the respect of the team, and fight for a spot on Kevin Stefanski’s roster. The competition is far from over and promises to be long and intense.
It’s important to remember that after finishing his college career at Colorado, Shedeur Sanders was considered a potential first-round draft pick. He had an outstanding season with 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdown passes, and just 10 interceptions. He also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, making him one of the most talked-about prospects.
However, despite his accomplishments, most NFL teams chose not to select him early. Once projected as a future star of the league, Sanders ended up being taken in the fifth round and is now competing for a roster spot with three other quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.
Former NFL receiver believes Shedeur should be the starter
During OTAs, Shedeur Sanders performed well. According to reports from ESPN, the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback threw nine touchdown passes and only one interception – though these numbers came in 7-on-7 drills without defensive pressure. Still, they may be a sign of his talent.
Historically, the Cleveland Browns haven’t had many high-quality quarterbacks. The last notable one was Baker Mayfield just a few years ago, but the team made the mistake of essentially pushing him out and signing Deshaun Watson, who has turned out to be a complete failure.
That’s why one of the top wide receivers in NFL history – James Jones, well remembered for his time with the Green Bay Packers – shared his opinion and said that Sanders should be the Week 1 starter.
“It’s been years and years since the Browns have had a consistent QB. I believe he’s the best one out there talent-wise. You have to start him Week 1,” said James Jones.
This situation is going to be very complicated, because up to this point – even after the mandatory minicamp – Shedeur Sanders is the only one of the four quarterbacks who has not had the opportunity to practice with the first team.
