Shedeur Sanders is projected to start against the Raiders: Kevin Stefanski can’t do anything to prevent it

The Cleveland Browns are heading toward yet another quarterback shake-up, and this time, it is rookie Shedeur Sanders who is expected to take the reins.

With fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel still in the concussion protocol and unlikely to be cleared in time, Sanders is poised to make his first NFL start on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, Sanders is poised to start ‘unless something dramatically shifts before kickoff’. With it, there is nothing head coach Kevin Stefanski can do to prevent it.

Sanders would become the 42nd quarterback to start a game for the Browns since 1999 – a statistic that perfectly captures the turbulence this franchise has endured at the sport’s most important position.

The rookie’s impending start comes days after his first NFL action, a challenging debut that unfolded during the Browns‘ 23-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Thrust into the game after Gabriel exited with a head injury, Sanders struggled to find rhythm, completing only a handful of passes and failing to lead the offense to points.

It was an abrupt introduction to professional speed, pressure and defensive unpredictability from his days when he dominated college football with Colorado.

Gabriel’s absence, however, is what opened this door. Before suffering the concussion, he had already been facing scrutiny following several underwhelming performances.

Despite occasional moments of composure, he had not commanded the Browns‘ offense with consistency or accuracy. The unit frequently stalled under his direction, increasing frustration within the building and among fans.

A decision made by circumstance, not preference

For Stefanski, the looming quarterback change is not a bold strategic manoeuvre but a medical inevitability.

With Gabriel still unable to practise and league concussion guidelines leaving minimal flexibility, the coach has no practical avenue to keep Sanders off the field.

Team officials have emphasised that Sanders‘ preparation has ramped up significantly this week, with added first-team reps and expanded involvement in game planning.

Still, the lack of choice is unmistakable. Even if the Browns had hoped to bring Sanders along gradually – or even avoid using him this season at all – the concussion protocol has left the coaching staff with one available option. Sanders starts, and Stefanski must adapt accordingly.

The reality also reflects the instability that the Browns have wrestled with for decades. Constant turnover, short-term fixes, and forced decisions have shaped their quarterback landscape.

Sanders‘ sudden promotion fits neatly into that long-running pattern, even if the organisation is desperate to end it.

What Sanders brings – and what he must overcome

Sanders‘ talent is not in doubt. At Colorado, under the guidance of his father Deion Sanders, he demonstrated arm strength, improvisational ability and poise in high-pressure moments.

Those traits are precisely why the Browns drafted him – but transitioning those strengths into the NFL requires time, repetition and comfort, none of which he has been afforded.

His first NFL snaps exposed the challenge ahead: the speed was faster, the windows tighter, the pressure immediate. And on Sunday, he will face a Raiders defense that has feasted on inexperienced quarterbacks all season. The environment will be loud, aggressive and unforgiving.

Yet within the Browns‘ organisation, there is hope that Sanders can provide a spark that Gabriel could not.

Mobility, confidence and natural playmaking give him a different profile from his teammate. If he can shake off the nerves of his debut and settle into the flow of the game, the Browns may discover something they desperately need: stability.

With the team fighting to stay relevant in the AFC race, the stakes are enormous. A strong performance from Sanders could create momentum and possibly ignite a quarterback conversation the Browns were not planning for.

A poor showing, however, could deepen the team’s problems and extend the quarterback carousel into yet another chapter.
