Before the most recent NFL Draft, Sanders appeared in most mock drafts as a projected first-round pick. He was considered the second-favorite quarterback, only behind Cam Ward, who was ultimately selected by the Tennessee Titans with the first overall pick. However, the big surprise was that Sanders ended up falling dramatically in the Draft.
The second quarterback selected was Jaxson Dart, who was projected to go between the late second round and early third round, but the New York Giants traded up to select him with the 25th pick. Four more quarterbacks were taken before Shedeur Sanders’ name was finally called in the fifth round, when he was selected by the Cleveland Browns.
In reality, it was completely unexpected. In the days leading up to the Draft, there was some sense that Sanders might fall to the early second round, but no one imagined what ultimately happened. Since then, Sanders has endured a tough journey, but he has kept his head high and fought for his spot. Even so, the road ahead is still long.

The Browns’ quarterback fully believes in himself
Shedeur Sanders began the preseason as the fourth option for the Cleveland Browns and was virtually forgotten by Kevin Stefanski. He started the regular season as the third option. After Joe Flacco’s departure, Sanders became the backup by Week 6, and following Dillon Gabriel’s concussion, he became the starter in Week 11-a role he never gave up.
Despite ups and downs, Shedeur Sanders showed flashes of talent, and the offense clearly looked better. While there is still a long way to go before he can be considered the unquestioned starter in 2026, the quarterback believes in himself:
“I proved to myself I’m able to dominate the league… Now, to do it on a consistent basis, that’s what the goal is,” Sanders said on the Up & Adams Show.
Sanders’ numbers were not spectacular: 7 touchdown passes, 10 interceptions, and 1,400 yards. However, considering the teams he faced-the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and Cincinnati Bengals-it was far from an easy challenge. Even so, he had standout moments.
A major challenge lies ahead for Shedeur Sanders, though he does have an advantage: Todd Monken, the Browns’ new head coach, previously wanted him as the backup for the Baltimore Ravens. Still, the competition will be interesting, with Deshaun Watson returning and Dillon Gabriel also under contract. The question remains: Will Monken bring in another quarterback?
