Shedeur Sanders is back in the frame with the Browns as ‘sloppy’ Dillon Gabriel wastes golden opportunity

The Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback situation is never short on drama, but this preseason, the stakes feel higher than ever.

With veterans and rookies battling for position, every throw and every snap is magnified under the weight of the franchise’s two-decade-long search for stability.

Yet amid the noise and uncertainty, Shedeur Sanders has chosen a different approach: patience and perseverance.

Sanders, once a college star at Colorado, has had to recalibrate his mindset in Cleveland. Unlike his college days, where he was the undisputed leader under center, the NFL has greeted him with fierce competition and few guarantees.

The Browns’ depth chart is packed, Joe Flacco’s experience has him penciled in as the likely starter, while Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are each vying for the backup spot.

For Sanders, this means limited snaps and an uphill battle for relevance.

A roster in flux and a mindset shift for Sanders

Unlike many young quarterbacks who might get frustrated or discouraged, Sanders has found a measure of peace in the process.

“Every day is a consistent journey. It’s a consistent battle, but I feel like I’m handling everything the way I’m supposed to. Just being a normal human,” Sanders told former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar in a recent interview.

“At this point in life, I don’t think I would fake anything because there is no need. Everything is just genuinely how I am.”

That quiet confidence has impressed coaches and teammates, even if the box scores do not yet show it.

With training camp reps scarce, Sanders knows every opportunity counts. His most recent performances in camp have been sharp, avoiding mistakes and showing command in the huddle, even as he often works with the second or third unit.

The Browns, meanwhile, remain noncommittal about the future. Joe Flacco brings veteran poise but is hardly the long-term answer.

Kenny Pickett, fresh off a disappointing stint in Pittsburgh, is looking for a fresh start. Dillon Gabriel, the rookie, has struggled to adjust to the speed and complexity of the pro game, opening the door for others to impress.

Will Sanders outlast the quarterback carousel?

Cleveland is not known for stability at quarterback, having cycled through dozens of signal-callers over the last twenty years.

Even now, there’s speculation that Sanders could be cut before the season begins, or relegated to the practice squad. Still, his attitude stands out in an environment that too often feels chaotic.

Despite long odds, Sanders’ work ethic and ability to tune out the noise have given him a shot to stick around.

If he continues to make the most of his limited reps and maintain the steady demeanor that’s earned him respect, there’s a chance he could outlast others on the depth chart.

The Browns’ front office has done little to tamp down the speculation, with owner Jimmy Haslam even expressing doubts about the decision to bring Sanders on board.

“That kind of fractured leadership only adds to the perception that Cleveland remains a chaotic and poorly run organization,” noted one AFC personnel executive this week.

If Sanders does not survive the final roster cuts, he will not be the first young quarterback to seek a fresh start elsewhere.

Yet there is a sense that wherever his journey leads, his mindset will remain unchanged: stay patient, put in the work, and never lose sight of the bigger picture.
