Shedeur Sanders’ injury may be the perfect excuse for Kevin Stefanski not to change his strange plans

For weeks, it seemed like Shedeur Sanders was set to be an afterthought in the Cleveland Browns quarterback room, a fifth-round pick slotted behind a pair of veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, and another rookie, Dillon Gabriel, who came off the board earlier. But as the days of training camp roll on, that narrative is beginning to crumble.

Sanders, quietly but consistently, has been the Browns‘ most efficient quarterback through nine camp sessions. He’s thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions, all while getting the second-fewest number of reps.

His poise in the pocket, anticipation, and ability to move defenders with his eyes have surprised even the most skeptical observers. While he was supposed to be the raw, developmental player, he’s playing more like a guy ready for NFL reps right now.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski has remained publicly cautious, tempering the hype with familiar coach-speak.

“He’s working extremely hard… still installing the stuff,” Stefanski said. Yet even he can’t ignore the mounting evidence: Sanders is producing.

He’s doing more with less and showing a command of the offense far beyond what anyone expected from the 144th overall pick.

On Day 9 of camp, Sanders was held out of team drills due to arm soreness. What first seemed like a precautionary move is now being viewed with more concern.

That self-reporting is no small thing in an NFL camp setting, especially for a rookie fighting for a roster spot. As Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot noted: “He’s fighting for a job… and wouldn’t miss reps unless he truly had to.”

With preseason games approaching, even missing two practices can be a major setback for a rookie. The difference between being QB2 or QB4 can be as small as a single drive in a joint practice or a standout series in a preseason matchup.

Sanders was building momentum, and this shoulder issue has stalled that just when the competition was intensifying.

That pressure isn’t letting up. The Browns are facing a situation where their most consistent rookie quarterback is suddenly unavailable, and their more experienced options are either sidelined or struggling.

If Sanders can bounce back quickly, he still has a window to make his mark. But for now, the momentum he worked so hard to build has been put on pause.
