The OTAs and mandatory veteran minicamp are now in the books for the Cleveland Browns. The entire camp was dominated by the quarterback battle, with four QBs now competing for the starting role, none of whom were on the team last season.
Deshaun Watson is still on the roster as a potential fifth quarterback, but due to a double Achilles tendon injury, it’s highly unlikely he’ll be ready to play in the first part of the season. And if he does recover, he will most likely have to seek an opportunity outside of Cleveland.
Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has repeatedly said that the competition is “open” and that everyone has an equal shot. However, all signs point to Joe Flacco-thanks to his performance with Cleveland in 2023-as the leading candidate to start the season.
Shedeur Sanders has impressed Browns insiders
The high-profile quarterback Shedeur Sanders has had to fight an uphill battle, and he still has a long way to go to prove whether he can stick with the Cleveland Browns-or if he’ll have to find a real shot elsewhere in the NFL.
Once projected as a first-round draft pick, Shedeur fell to the fifth round, and now finds himself as the fourth quarterback on the Browns’ depth chart. That may be why Coach Stefanski has yet to give him any first-team reps, even though several team insiders have said Deion Sanders’ son has looked very good.
During OTAs, ESPN reported that Sanders threw 9 touchdown passes with only 1 interception. Meanwhile, Jason Pinkston, Browns analyst and former player, expressed his excitement about Sanders’ throws on a podcast.
“I do like Shedeur. I saw him throw some balls into some windows and it was like, ‘wow,'” said Pinkston.
Like Pinkston, many analysts have noted that Shedeur Sanders looks like a complete quarterback-and it’s no surprise, considering he was once considered a first-round talent. There’s no doubt Sanders is motivated to succeed in the NFL and prove the teams that passed on him completely wrong.
