With minicamp in full swing and the preseason still well over a month away, the Cleveland Browns and head coach Kevin Stefanski are truly in the dark when it comes to knowing who their starting quarterback will be for the 2025 season. Odds are on Kenny Pickett being first in line, but anything can happen.
Joe Flacco has gotten starter reps in camp, as has third round rookie Dillon Gabriel. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders is waiting in the wings, doing everything right in the building and developing a strong fanbase outside of it. It’s not only fans that want to see the fifth round rookie start; even former Browns first round pick Johnny Manziel is on board the Sanders hype train.
Johnny Manziel says Shedeur Sanders can win Cleveland Browns starting quarterback job immediately
While speaking with Las Vegas Raiders star pass-rusher Maxx Crosby on a podcast, Manziel delved into the Browns quarterback situation. Although he doesn’t like the minute-by-minute coverage it has gotten, he has a feeling that Sanders can end up winning the job once all is said and done.
“He’s got an opportunity now in Cleveland with a quarterback situation, that he can honestly come out of and win the job,” Manziel added. “I think he’ll do well. I really do. I think the kid works really hard and loves the game of ball, when it comes down to it, when you have a guy like that, that loves the game. I think he’ll be successful.“
Manziel knows plenty about navigating a quarterback competition. As a first round rookie, Manziel lost out on the starting job to veteran Brian Hoyer. Manziel ended up making just eight starts for the Browns, with off-field issues plaguing his career.
“Johnny Football” has been outspoken in recent years, and he still has an analytical eye when it comes to the sport. He likes what he sees in Sanders, with his work ethic standing out in particular. That’s something Manziel himself struggled with as a player.
