With mandatory minicamps underway, NFL teams have everything at their disposal to start thinking about major roster decisions. There are camp battles happening all over the NFL, but no battle has more eyes on it than the Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback competition. Any QB battle with four potential winners will draw attention, but Shedeur Sanders makes this one all the more interesting.
There’s a wide range of outcomes for Sanders, which may also apply to Dillon Gabriel and Joe Flacco. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Sanders win the starting job, but it also wouldn’t be a surprise if he doesn’t even make the team, given that he’s been fourth in line for reps since all quarterbacks reported. While Sanders is in a battle on the field, his father, Deion Sanders, has been battling health issues of his own off the field. It has all accumulated for Shedeur, who seems to be affected by all of it.
On late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, the Browns rookie set off alarms by tweeting that “It’s a spiritual war going on“. No one really understood how to take that, so Sanders came out to clarify what happened to him.
What is the “spiritual war” Shedeur Sanders is fighting?
While speaking to the media, Sanders admitted that he was “too scared” and had to sleep with a flashlight on the night before mandatory minicamp began. He felt “I got God talking to me” at that moment.
I was in my hotel room. I was talking to a couple pastors yesterday just about my purpose and everything here. It’s a lot going on I’ll say in my mind and I understand what peace is. I know I’m going home so I can just focus on the little things in life, just feeling the wind, hearing the birds, all that different type of stuff. It’s something that you value now. It’s something I value. So that was the main thing, hearing what he was saying and understanding the message of what it is he was telling me yesterday.
These comments came after Sanders was asked in what aspect he’s grown the most since being drafted by the Browns. His answer was, “spiritually“. It’s clear that Sanders is operating on a different wavelength since his draft night disaster.
He’s adamant that a higher being has him on a different plan than he initially thought, but he’s fully bought-in to whatever happens from now on.
