Shedeur Sanders fans claim NFL bias against rookie as first game action nears

Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders has been promoted to backup quarterback ahead of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, stirring debate among fans who feel he isn’t receiving the same opportunities as other novice quarterbacks.

Sanders, a fifth-round pick from Colorado, had previously served as the team’s third-string quarterback. He could see his first NFL regular-season playing time if circumstances push him into action.

Supporters argue this is a critical moment for his development and fans have compared Sanders’ situation to Giants QB Jaxson Dart, who has received heavy support from his coaching staff and media coverage.

However, an NFL reporter isn’t a fan of this: “Try comparing Dart to a quarterback who has the same opportunity to start,” Josina Anderson said.

“Jaxson Dart has a head coach absolutely pushing him for his survival. Shedeur Sanders clearly does not.”

Sanders’ supporters cite his strong college career and the potential he brings to the Browns’ offense. They feel he should receive consistent in-game reps to develop fully, rather than waiting for an emergency situation.

“I’m always thinking about our players and what’s best for our players,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “When it comes to young football players, particularly at quarterback, you are intentional about your decision-making.”

Will Sanders get his shot at the Browns?

The debate raises questions about how teams prioritize rookie quarterbacks. Sanders’ role as backup limits his exposure, while Dart benefits from trust and visibility. The contrast highlights how coaching philosophy and opportunity shape public perception.

Some analysts argue the Browns are cautious with Sanders due to his inexperience, yet a matchup against the Steelers could be ideal for him to gain meaningful experience without excessive risk.

Fans have also noted the disparity in media attention. Despite Sanders’ rise from Colorado to the NFL, coverage remains muted compared to Dart. Josina Anderson emphasized that context is key when evaluating these situations.

Sanders’ supporters remain vocal online, demanding he receive similar backing as other rookie quarterbacks. If given snaps and performing well, he could prove skeptics wrong and force a reevaluation of perceived bias.

Sunday’s game may be a pivotal moment for Sanders. Whether he earns significant playing time or remains on the sidelines, his performance could determine how the NFL and fans view his development and future potential.

With the Browns facing the Steelers in a key AFC matchup, all eyes are on Kevin Stefanski’s management of Sanders and whether the rookie finally gets the opportunity he has been waiting for.

Fans can tune into the game on October 12 from 13:00 ET/10:00 PT, with the 1-4 Cleveland taking on 3-1 Pittsburgh at the Acrisure Stadium live on CBS Sports, and Paramount+ for streaming.
