Shedeur Sanders faces criticism as Deion Sanders’ reaction draws spotlight in Browns’ win over Steelers

The Cleveland Browns emerged with a hard-fought 13-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in a bruising AFC North matchup defined by physical defense, turnovers, and a major interception thrown by Shedeur Sanders.

While the result strengthened Cleveland‘s position late in the 2025 NFL season, much of the postgame conversation centered not on the final score, but on a single play involving rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Early on, the Browns looked in control. Sanders guided Cleveland to a 10-0 lead, capped by a confident 28-yard touchdown pass to Fannin Jr.

The opening stretch showcased the poise that convinced the organization to hand the rookie the reins against one of the league’s most aggressive defenses. However, that momentum did not last.

Midway through the third quarter, pressure from Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith forced Sanders into a hurried decision.

The quarterback attempted to force a throw that was intercepted by linebacker Jack Sawyer, swinging energy back toward Pittsburgh and instantly becoming one of the defining moments of the game.

Cameras quickly cut to Deion Sanders, watching from the stands. The Hall of Famer appeared visibly upset immediately following the turnover, his reaction reflecting the raw emotion of a father watching his son navigate another pressure-filled moment early in his NFL career.

The scene became a major talking point Sunday, amplifying the scrutiny already surrounding Shedeur Sanders.

Online reaction highlights growing scrutiny

The interception triggered a wave of criticism and taunts across social media, underscoring how quickly opinion can turn on young quarterbacks in high-profile situations.

“Shedeur Sanders should be selling insurance. Awful QB,” a fan wrote.

Another viewer added: “No way to sugarcoat that interception from Shedeur Sanders. One of the worst decisions you will see in the NFL.”

A third comment was even harsher: “Shedeur just had probably the worst interception I’ve ever seen. That dude is so bad haha.”

Not all responses placed the blame squarely on the quarterback. One fan offered a defense of the rookie, pointing to a lack of effort elsewhere on the play.

“That Shedeur Sanders interception was just terrible but dawg Jerry Jeudy gave literally no effort in trying to catch that ball. He literally let the defender walk in front of him and catch the ball. He didn’t try to fight for it or make a play on the ball.”

The polarized reaction reflects the reality facing Sanders throughout the 2025 season. Statistically, the rookie has struggled to find consistency.

Across 167 attempts, he has completed 92 passes for 1,103 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions, posting a 55.1 percent completion rate and an 18.6 QBR.

Deion Sanders’ perspective and Shedeur’s mindset

The attention surrounding the Sanders family is nothing new. Earlier this season, after a matchup against the Chicago Bears in which Shedeur threw three interceptions, Deion Sanders addressed the moment publicly on X.

“Well, it didn’t Come Out like we wanted it to, but we’re thankful that the OutCome taught us things that will ultimately bless us on our journey. #CoachPrime.”

That perspective aligns closely with how Sanders has framed his rookie season. Speaking on December 18, 2025, the quarterback addressed the pressure he faces and embracing the challenge rather than shrinking from it.

“I’m just excited that I’m able to get everybody’s best,” he said. “I’m excited about that. That makes me feel proud that I have that.

“I’m just getting in the league, getting my feet settled, and everything. So I get excited knowing I’m able to face those challenges, because you’ve gotta understand, this year right here, this is the worst it’s going to be.

“So this is the foundation. This is where I’m building from. This is where I’m understanding different things. This is where everything’s translating for me. So I’m excited about it, because I know we’re going to get them eventually.”

For the Browns, Sunday’s win over the Steelers was a testament to resilience and defensive toughness.

For Sanders, it was another chapter in a rookie season defined by growth and mistakes, which often go hand in hand. But he is relishing the journey to becoming a better quarterback, despite the loud noise about his interception.
