Shedeur Sanders explains plays to Joe Flacco while both check the QB wristband at the Pro Bowl

Shedeur Sanders arrived in the NFL facing immediate competition for the starting job with Joe Flacco and other quarterbacks in Cleveland. Now, with Flacco inCincinnati, Sanders appears to have a clearer path toward the starting role next season though nothing is guaranteed. The departure of Kevin Stefanski has left those decisions in the hands of Todd Monken, who will ultimately shape Sanders’ future with the Cleveland Browns.

One of the most eye catching moments during Pro Bowl week came when Sanders was seen explaining plays on the QB wristband to Flacco. The rookie went from competing with the veteran for the starting job to calmly walking him through reads on the field, a scene that perfectly captured how quickly circumstances can change in the NFL.

From rivals to Pro Bowl moment

There’s also a sense that timing and perhaps a bit more has aligned in Sanders’ favor. After enduring a difficult draft moment by being selected No. 144 overall, he now finds himself at the Pro Bowl, while the No. 1 overall pick, Cam Ward, watches Sanders take part in the on-field festivities.

From the start, Sanders and Flacco appeared to have a strong relationship. There were no signs of tension or unhealthy competition, and Sanders benefited when Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals relatively quickly, opening more opportunities in Cleveland.

Sanders finished his rookie season by starting the final seven games for the Browns. He completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 169 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Cleveland went 3-4 in games he started. His Pro Bowl appearance comes during the fourth edition of the Pro Bowl Games, the NFL’s revamped all-star event featuring skills competitions and a flag football game instead of full contact.

Sanders replaced Drake Maye at the Pro Bowl after Maye’s New England Patriots advanced to Super Bowl LX, where they will face the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, Sanders can share a lighthearted moment with Flacco on the Pro Bowl field. After battling him in the quarterback room for the starting role, the two now share a memory that feels almost symbolic, one more chapter in a rookie season that has already taken several unexpected turns.
