Shedeur Sanders’ tenure leading the Cleveland Browns’ offense was more of a disappointment than a success. Despite this, many analysts and fans believe the young quarterback should be the starter next season, all except for the esteemed insider Tony Grossi.
More than nine months have passed since the Browns had five quarterbacks on their roster, and they’re no closer to finding the answers they need.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski began the offseason with Sanders, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel on the active roster, plus Deshaun Watson on injured reserve.
When Flacco and Gabriel failed, Stefanski gave Shedeur the opportunity. The son of the legendary Deion Sanders finished with a 3-5 record, raising serious doubts about whether he’s the right fit for the full-time job.
Grossi Draws a Line in the Sand for Shedeur
The renowned ESPN Cleveland insider Tony Grossi made it clear that Shedeur shouldn’t arrive at the upcoming training camps with the starting job guaranteed.
“I think he’ll compete. I think it’ll be fair,” Grossi said Tuesday. “I don’t think he deserves to be given the job. Andrew Berry’s had ten times he could commit to them, and he never has.”
Grossi was referring, in particular, to the Browns’ general manager’s statements in early January, when Berry said they would continue to explore the quarterback market.
Furthermore, after Stefanski’s departure, Grossi asserted that the new head coach will have significant influence on the decision to hire a new signal-caller.
Shedeur, the Browns, and the Watson Issue
Adding to the confusion surrounding Cleveland’s quarterback situation, Berry has mentioned Watson, Sanders, and Gabriel as potential starters, but without committing to any of them.
Watson’s contract also enters the equation. The eight-year veteran has a $230 million deal that expires in 2026, with a base salary of $46 million and a dead cap of $131 million.
Although the eight-year veteran hasn’t delivered the expected results, the weight of his contract is a factor that the Browns’ next head coach will have to seriously consider.
