The 2025 NFL Draft will always be remembered as the year when Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders went from being a projected top pick to slipping to the fifth round.
Much has been said about this, as details continue to emerge about the nightmare experienced by the son of former player and current coach, Deion Sanders.
The Latest Revelation About Shedeur Sanders and the Draft
Several teams that had projected selecting Shedeur Sanders in the first round, or even the next, repeatedly passed on his name until the Cleveland Browns finally chose him (not before taking Dillon Gabriel).
Now, according to Boomer Esiason, former Cincinnati Bengals star and 1988 NFL MVP, he was told by league insiders that multiple team owners demanded Sanders’ name be removed from their draft boards due to the player’s attitude and behavior during the pre-draft process.
“They took him off,” Esiason said in a video circulating on social media. “And they took him off because the owner said, ‘Take him off. I don’t want that guy.’ Shedeur Sanders just torpedoed himself. His attitude off the field, at the combine. His dad didn’t help him either. He was on podcasts talking about ‘This is my son. If I can get him to where I want to get him to, I’m going to do that.’ But you know when you listen to this kid talk right prior or at the combine, about ‘If you want a new culture in your locker room, I’m the guy to do that. I can turn it around.’ I mean, he’s very high on himself.”
“I think he was very off-putting to many, many coaches and general managers in the league,” Esiason added. “I’m telling you right now, and I know this after talking to three different personnel people this weekend. They didn’t even have him on their board. They took him off. And they took him off because the owner said, ‘Take him off.'”
Sanders, widely regarded by many as the second-best quarterback prospect, plummeted in the draft.
He now heads to the Cleveland Browns, where he will compete for the starting position against Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel, a quarterback selected before Sanders-an uphill battle that some believe could even jeopardize his spot on the roster.
