Before the last NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders imagined himself as a team’s starting quarterback, and especially as the star. But after the Draft, a harsh reality began for Deion Sanders’ son. Shedeur was projected to be a first-round pick but ended up being selected in the fifth round.
The main issue for Shedeur Sanders wasn’t being picked at overall 144, but that the Cleveland Browns, two rounds earlier in the third round, had already chosen another quarterback: Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks. On top of that, the Browns already had Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco under contract, so that’s when Sanders’ trial began-a trial that is still ongoing.
From that moment, Shedeur Sanders was considered the fourth-string quarterback for the Browns, but he has gradually advanced. Before the season, he became the third-string QB when Kenny Pickett left, and now that Joe Flacco is also gone, Sanders has become the backup and seems poised for his opportunity.
Shedeur Sanders has made significant progress, according to insiders
He has been patient. Beyond what people say about his personality, the young quarterback has been professional and accepted the roles assigned to him. It’s clear that Cleveland Browns fans want to see him as a starter, which is why there’s so much buzz around the franchise, but Sanders has remained calm.
Shedeur Sanders knows his moment will come during the season, and it seems to be approaching. Mary Kay Cabot, a Cleveland Browns insider, revealed that Sanders has made tremendous progress: “Shedeur Sanders’ development has gone really, really well behind the scenes… making progress in every way, including in all the ways they needed him to.”
Meanwhile, the starter is still Dillon Gabriel. Although he earned his first NFL victory last Sunday in Week 7, he hasn’t shown much, and Mary Kay noted that the Oregon Ducks alum needs to take his game to the next level: “He’s managing the game well… now he needs to start to add in some passing game and some explosives.”
For now, Dillon Gabriel remains the starting quarterback, even though he has gone two consecutive games without a single touchdown, and the pressure is fully on him. NFL fans-not just Browns fans-are curious to see Shedeur Sanders start, so the pressure on Gabriel is immense.
