Shedeur Sanders could be the reason the New Orleans Saints make a grave mistake the franchise will remember for many years

A few weeks ago, during the offseason, the New Orleans Saints shared terrible news after it was reported that their quarterback, Derek Carr, is dealing with a shoulder injury that may require surgery-putting his participation in the entire 2025 season at risk.

Given this situation, it’s clear the Saints have become prime candidates to look for a quarterback, either through free agency-where options are limited-or in the Draft. The Saints have the 9th overall pick, and with Shedeur Sanders slipping down the boards, he could fall to that spot and be taken by New Orleans.

However, another team in need of a quarterback is the Pittsburgh Steelers. After failing to land Aaron Rodgers, there is a scenario-according to team insiders-where the Steelers could trade up from the 21st pick to the 7th and steal Sanders away from the Saints.

The mistake the Saints could make, according to an expert

The New Orleans Saints have already been warned. Bryce Lazenby from Newsweek stated that the team should avoid selecting quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 9th pick, as it would be a serious risk.

“Jaxson Dart has been climbing draft boards as the big day approaches. He was extremely productive at Ole Miss, and his performance in the Senior Bowl caught scouts’ attention,” Lazenby noted.

“With the recent news about Derek Carr’s injury, the team could panic and try to land a quarterback. However, picking someone like Dart would be a bad decision. Dart has a strong arm, great leadership, and the toughness teams look for in a quarterback. Still, there are doubts about whether he can thrive in an NFL offense, and the Saints’ roster isn’t good enough to support a rookie.”

However, the writer believes picking Dart in the second round wouldn’t be a bad move-if he falls that far. He suggests that if the Steelers move up to draft Sanders, there wouldn’t be many other quarterback-needy teams, and the Saints could potentially land Dart with the 40th pick.

Dart’s stock has been rising in recent weeks, and even the New York Giants could consider selecting him in the second round, should the Ole Miss star drop that far.
