A lot has been said about Shedeur Sanders over the past seven months or so. The Colorado quarterback came out of college as the No. 2 quarterback on almost every pre-draft ranking, yet the 2025 NFL Draft played out completely differently. There were some signs along the way, but people clearly didn’t pay enough attention to them.
In particular, there was a damning report about Sanders’ meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It apparently went so awry that it practically took Sanders off of their draft board. Many attributed the negative pre-draft reports to slander, claiming that Sanders was being targeted by jealous people trying to bring him down. In reality, NFL front offices simply weren’t completely sold on his talent and his personality.
Now with the Cleveland Browns, we still don’t know which pre-draft meeting reports are fully true, or if they were embellished. Two months following his draft slide, the rumors about his disastrous pre-draft meetings have been fortified.
Shedeur Sanders apparently didn’t take the pre-draft process seriously
According to an anonymous scout from a different NFL team, Sanders’ pre-draft process was ultimately what led to him falling so far in the draft.
“Shedeur Sanders is a very polarizing guy. We didn’t like his attitude and how he handled the draft process. He wasn’t prepared. He mailed it in at every step. He didn’t take it seriously enough.“
This aligns with a report from Albert Breer shortly after the draft, where it was revealed that Sanders basically failed the New York Giants’ test. Sanders seemingly butted heads with head coach Brian Daboll, who called the quarterback out when he didn’t recognize deliberate mistakes in their “install”.
Breer said that Sanders didn’t respond well to Daboll and the rest of the Giants’ executives in the room, going so far as to say “maybe I’m not a fit for you”. In order to truly succeed in the NFL, Sanders will have to take everything seriously, both on and off the field. So far, it seems like he has learned from his mistakes, but it’s early days.
