Shedeur Sanders’ big question: Will he accept being coached by someone other than his father Deion?

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, Shedeur Sanders, the standout quarterback from the University of Colorado, has garnered significant attention.

However, former NFL head coach Eric Mangini has raised concerns about Sanders’ preparedness for the professional league.

Mangini, known for his candid assessments, noted that Sanders has only been coached by his father, Deion Sanders, throughout his collegiate career. He emphasized that the transition to the NFL would present challenges that Sanders hasn’t yet faced, such as adapting to diverse coaching styles and team dynamics.

“The only element where I think Deion comes into play here, and forget about him being Deion Sanders, is he’s only played for his dad. That’s his only head coach, his dad. So, how is he gonna take coaching from someone he is not related to?” Mangini said on FS1’s “The Facility”.

“And I don’t think that’s an unfair question at all. I think that’s a question that you really have to figure out. Because the dynamic between father and son, and coach and player is different.”

Mangini’s perspective suggests that while Sanders’ talent is undeniable, his experience under a single coaching system may limit his adaptability in the multifaceted environment of the NFL.

Evaluating Shedeur Sanders’ NFL prospects

Shedeur Sanders’ journey from Jackson State to Colorado has been marked by impressive performances and leadership. Despite these accolades, some NFL scouts express reservations about his readiness for the professional stage.

Critics point to his limited exposure to varied coaching philosophies and competitive environments, which could impact his performance in the NFL.

In contrast, other quarterbacks in the draft pool have demonstrated versatility by thriving under multiple coaching regimes, potentially offering a broader skill set and adaptability. This contrast highlights the importance of diverse experiences in preparing for the complexities of professional football.

While Shedeur Sanders’ potential is evident, the concerns raised by Eric Mangini underscore the complexities of transitioning from college to the NFL. As teams evaluate draft prospects, the ability to adapt to new coaching styles and environments will be a critical factor in determining a player’s success at the professional level.
