Shedeur Sanders begins new chapter without his father on the sideline

Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, is entering the NFL with a clear mission: to establish himself independently, even while carrying one of football’s most recognizable last names.

For years, dating back to his time at Jackson State and Colorado, Shedeur and his father, Hall of Famer and coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, shared a special pregame ritual. Before each kickoff, the two would walk the sideline together, first as father and son, then returning as quarterback and coach.

It was a quiet but powerful tradition that defined much of Shedeur’s college career.

Now on a professional field, Shedeur kept that ritual alive in his own way. Ahead of his NFL preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers, he was seen walking the sideline alone.

Though his father wasn’t physically present, Shedeur continued their pregame tradition solo, symbolizing both respect for their bond and his desire to grow into his role without outside noise or distraction.

A quiet shift in the sideline routine

The walk came just weeks after Shedeur made headlines for requesting that his father not attend Browns training camp. As the fourth quarterback on the team’s depth chart, behind veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, he felt it was too early for fatherly praise.

“You can’t be proud of me right now,” he said, noting that he still has work to do to earn his place.

Shedeur explained his decision further, pointing out the double-edged sword of being Deion Sanders’ son. “It’s a gift and a curse,” he said. While the support from his father is always welcome, the media attention and spectacle that follows Deion can easily overshadow the team and distract from his development. His focus, he emphasized, needs to remain firmly on football, not family fame.

That focus seemed to pay off. In his first NFL action, Shedeur went 14-for-23, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-10 win over the Panthers. It was a strong debut that showed poise and potential, all without the sidelines filled with cameras tracking his father’s reactions.

While Deion praised his son’s performance from afar, it was clear that Shedeur is ready to step into his own spotlight. The solo walk before the game wasn’t just a tribute to a tradition, it was a declaration that he’s ready to earn everything on his own terms.
