Shedeur Sanders arrives at the Browns practice field for the first time craving for a cake

Shedeur Sanders and his journey to make the Cleveland Browns 53-player active roster began Thursday as the former Colorado Buffaloes superstar arrived at the Berea facility in Ohio.

Sanders will compete with veteran starter Joe Flacco – who has already won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens -, former No. 20 pick overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Kenny Pickett, and No. 94 pick in the 2025 Draft, Dillon Gabriel.

More likely than not, one of the quarterbacks is going to get cut, and that could be Sanders. The chip on the shoulders of the youngest son of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders is huge, as all the franchises in the NFL passed on him at least once, if not more, even the Cleveland Browns.

Shedeur Sanders arrives at the Browns practice field

One of the first things that Shedeur Sanders did after arriving at Berea facility was to look for coach Kevin Stefanski, who turned 43 on Thursday. “I ain’t walking out there, I can’t go out there yet. It’s a good vibe. Oh yeah, y’all got to tell coach Stefanski Happy Birthday, y’all supposed to bring a cake to practice,” said a very happy Shedeur.

One of the best college quarterbacks last season also got to walk in the locker room and see his practice jerseys for the first time with the iconic 12 on them. “We’ve got Browns notebook, I have everything I need to be succesful right here. Got my brown hoodie right here to get my drip right,” added Shedeur as he got to see his locker.

He will be part of Phase Two of the nine-week offseason workout program, a three-week period on-field where workouts are allowed but limited to individual or group instruction drills. It can also include “perfect play drills,” and drills and plays where offensive players line up across from offensive players, and defensive players line up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace.

Browns expect Sanders to work and compete for the job

The Cleveland Browns have been pretty clear with Shedeur Sanders on the fact that nothing will be given to him – or any player on the team right now -, as he will need to work and compete for a job. With that being said, executive vice president and general manager Andrew Berry knows that Shedeur‘s acquisition cost was pretty light and that he can outproduce his draft slot.”

Sanders was one of the most discussed players of the draft class after winning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors with the Colorado Buffaloes in the 2024 regular season. He completed 74% of his passes with 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2024, earning him second team All-American honors.

“The Browns reviewed all the film they could with Sanders as they looked to revamp their quarterback room. They had pre-draft interviews with both Sanders and spent time with both him and his father, Deion Sanders, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado coach who coached his son throughout college,” the team posted on their websiste.
