Let’s not jump to conclusions about Shedeur Sanders’ strong showing with the Cleveland Browns or Jaxson Dart’s solid outing for the New York Giants-after all, it’s only preseason. That said, both rookies lived up to expectations, playing nearly flawlessly and logging the most snaps among their team’s quarterbacks.
Outside of Cam Ward, the undisputed top draft prospect who went first overall to the Titans, Sanders and Dart were pegged as the second- and third-best QB talents. Dart was indeed the second quarterback selected, but Sanders was the sixth QB off the board in the fifth round. NFL teams in need of a quarterback may now see this as a mistake. Right now, neither looks set to start Week 1, but their debuts have certainly caught their coaches’ eyes and ramped up the buzz.
Sanders Shines in Browns’ Preseason Opener
Shedeur Sanders turned heads in his NFL debut on Thursday night, leading the Cleveland Browns to a 30-10 rout of the Carolina Panthers. The rookie went 14-of-23 for 138 yards, tossing two touchdowns with a sparkling 106.8 passer rating-all in the first half, where he connected twice with Kaden Davis for scores. Sanders capitalized on the absences of Kenny Pickett (hamstring) and Dillon Gabriel (minor knee issue), stepping up as the primary QB and taking the lion’s share of snaps.
This performance could boost his case for more opportunities, especially in a franchise that’s cycled through 40 starting quarterbacks since 1999-the most in the NFL-with only Tim Couch and Baker Mayfield ever playing a full season. Pickett still holds the edge thanks to his two years as a starter in Pittsburgh and last season’s Super Bowl ring as a backup, but Sanders’ media magnetism and continued strong play could swing the door wide open.
Dart Impresses in Giants’ Victory Over Bills
Jaxson Dart also made a strong first impression helping the New York Giants secure a 34-25 preseason win against the Buffalo Bills. The first-round pick completed 12-of-19 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown, showing poise and accuracy while sharing time with the team’s quartet of signal-callers. Unlike the Browns’ open QB battle, the Giants’ starting job is firmly in Russell Wilson‘s grasp-the Super Bowl champ has been an invaluable mentor to Dart, alongside Jameis Winston, guiding the rookie through camp.
If Wilson stumbles and the Giants struggle for wins, Dart could get his shot sooner than expected. But if Wilson delivers, it might be smarter for Dart to soak up experience from the sidelines, building toward a bigger role in year two-rushing a rookie into action isn’t always ideal, especially when the veteran is clicking.
They both passed the first test with flying colors, but consistency is key. To be successful in the NFL, the big names have in common the adjectives consistency, discipline, and focus. The Browns’ next game is on Saturday against the defending champion Eagles. The Giants will also play on Saturday the 16th, against the Jets.
